TAMPA, Fla., July 28 /PRNewswire/ — Crescent City Physicians, Inc. (CCPI) has chosen the Intergy EHR by Sage integrated electronic health records and practice management system to meet the clinical and administrative management needs of its ambulatory care practices. CCPI’s Crescent City Cardiovascular Associates and NOLA Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons divisions are included in the implementation.
The 38-physician, multi-specialty practice, a division of Touro Infirmary, operates 12 locations in the greater New Orleans area.
Dale Mertens, Vice President of Physicians Services of Touro Infirmary and President of Crescent City Physicians, Inc., said the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina spurred CCPI to make the jump to electronic health records.
“After Katrina, we saw how badly some practices were affected. We were lucky — CCPI’s billing and financial systems were up and running within a week and a half and our physicians began treating patients in mid-October,” Mr. Mertens noted. “So many of our counterparts were devastated by the destruction. It showed us the importance of electronic records, both clinically and administratively, from a disaster recovery standpoint.”
“But beyond that,” Mr. Mertens continued, “electronic health records are an important tool toward helping us to continue to provide outstanding healthcare in an efficient manner. We chose Intergy EHR by Sage after a lengthy process that initially evaluated 12 electronic health records systems. Our physician evaluators were impressed with Intergy’s functionality. But the human aspect — Sage Software’s commitment to healthcare, their responsiveness and their dedication is a strong reason we partnered with them.”
CCPI also chose the Intergy by Sage practice management system and its Enterprise Desktop for multi-site administrative control, and the Practice Analytics by Sage business intelligence system for robustly detailed clinical and administrative data analysis.
“We value our long-term partnership with the forward-looking team at Touro Infirmary’s CCPI,” said Sharon L. Howard, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Sales for Sage Software Healthcare, Inc. “The adoption of electronic health records is an important aspect of disaster preparedness.”

The webcast will feature Michael Day, Director of Information Technology, and Ajay Chaudhari, Network Design Specialist for Daughters of Charity and they will discuss their process for choosing and implementing a solution: how they built internal buy-in, identified and addressed potential pitfalls, and made critical decisions on replacing their previously implemented system with ZixCorp’s Email Encryption Service.
To register for this informative webinar, please visit or call 866-257-4949.
Additionally, the ZixCorp website is now featuring a Daughters of Charity success story that outlines issues that will be discussed during the upcoming webinar. Below is an excerpt from the success story:
“The security of protected health information (PHI) is very important,” said Michael Day, Director of Information Technology for DCHS. “Not only from a regulatory standpoint enforced by the health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), but because our patients and staff need to have that confidence in us.”
Not satisfied with the email encryption solution they were using, DCHS switched to ZixCorp’s Email Encryption Service.
“With our old solution, we were concerned we were at risk of not properly protecting our patients’ sensitive data or other important business information,” said Day. “It was also a massive challenge to administer the whole process from installation through to mailbox management, information tracking and overall maintenance. We needed a more efficient and thorough process.”
Day liked what ZixCorp had to offer because of its ease of use and excellent reputation as the leading email encryption solution for health care organizations. “It was simple to set up, fast to deploy, and transparent to use,” he said. “It has a better hit rate of encrypting messages than our previous solution. ZixCorp’s service detects PHI and other sensitive information and ensures they’re secured before delivery.”

American Well and Microsoft Enter Into a Strategic Collaboration to Bring Healthcare to People’s Homes

July 4th, 2008 by admin

SAN FRANCISCO, June 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Today at America’s health Insurance Plans (AHIP) Institute 2008, American Well Inc. and Microsoft Corp. announced that they have entered into a strategic collaboration to introduce an integrated consumer health solution that brings together American Well’s Online Healthcare Marketplace and Microsoft HealthVault, Microsoft’s online consumer health platform. The integrated solution will allow consumers to use their health information to interact live, online and on-demand with physicians from their home or office.
(Logo: )
The Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA), Blue Cross Blue Shield of Hawaii, plans to be the first health plan in the nation to offer the integrated solution to all Hawaii residents. It is slated to become available during the upcoming open enrollment period.
“At the heart of this strategic collaboration is the understanding that personal health information becomes truly meaningful when consumers and providers can use it in the process of actual care,” said Peter Neupert, corporate vice president of the health Solutions Group at Microsoft.
Microsoft’s HealthVault platform allows people to collect, store and manage personal health information and share it with physicians, family members and other trusted third parties. Consumers can store information from multiple sources including provider and hospital record systems, home monitoring devices, and patient entries. American Well’s Online Healthcare Marketplace enables live communication between a consumer and healthcare provider. By adding HealthVault, consumers would be able to collect and provide health information for advised, coordinated care.
“This innovative solution promises to advance both the quality of care and quality of service HMSA brings to our members and our community,” said Michael Gold, chief operating officer of HMSA.
“Convenient, immediate and affordable online care in people’s homes is becoming a reality in 2008,” said Ido Schoenberg, M.D., chief executive officer of American Well. “With HealthVault, we can offer better data-enriched communication, device connectivity, access and portability to health plan members and nonmembers.”
The integrated solution will allow consumers to use their health information from HealthVault to drive online consultations with providers on the American Well system. In Hawaii, credentialed physicians who are already part of the HMSA network will be able to make themselves available, at their discretion, for online and phone consultations with plan members as well as other consumers. This on-demand interaction between consumers and providers will be under advisement of consumers’ care coordinator, namely their primary care physician.

Updated Microsoft Health Common User Interface Furthers Clinical Effectiveness, Increases Patient Safety

June 15th, 2008 by admin

REDMOND, Washington, May 13 /PRNewswire/ —

- New elements include platform updates and product road map for
developers.

Healthcare developers can take the next step towards increasing patient
safety and clinician effectiveness with the new version 1.3 of Microsoft
Health Common User Interface (CUI), available today from Microsoft Corp. A
portfolio of user interface guidance, software toolkit controls and showcase
demonstrators, the Microsoft health CUI supports software developers in
delivering safe and effective clinical applications. Based on a set of
patient safety principles, the guidance and controls from CUI are available
at no cost and are focused on medication management, patient record noting,
hand-over of care, consistent navigation and patient identification — all
areas of potential patient safety risk. Version 1.3 also provides an 18-month
road map of product releases and substantial guidance updates, and utilises
Microsoft Silverlight technology to showcase the latest demonstrators.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)

Developed in collaboration with and in use today at the National Health
Service (NHS) in England, as well as a growing worldwide community of
healthcare providers and developers, the CUI became available to all
healthcare developers worldwide in July 2007. The CUI allows software vendors
and application developers flexibility to develop solutions to meet their own
specialised development challenges and spend more time focusing on
facilitating patient care through new and innovative software applications.
Most notably, version 1.3 moves the CUI to a new technology platform with
fresh controls, samples and demonstrations now being developed especially for
Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Silverlight. The use of these
platforms within the CUI enables software vendors and application developers
to provide richer and more flexible user interfaces for specific healthcare
implementations. Also, an 18-month interactive road map for the design
guidance and controls is available today, intended for software and
application developers who want to better understand updated timelines and
ways they can participate in the Microsoft health CUI community.

“A common look and feel to systems across any institution decreases the
chances for errors, but nowhere is that more important than a healthcare
institution where lives are at stake,” said Tim Smokoff, general manager of
worldwide public sector, Microsoft Healthcare and Life Sciences division.
“Sharing the road map for the next 18 months allows developers to plan for
new updates to the Microsoft health Common User Interface, meaning they can
implement them faster and with better success, reducing the margin for error
and challenges.”
Potential Benefits for Healthcare Institutions and Partners

Today’s announcement furthers Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to help
leverage the power of software to transform the healthcare industry for
patients, healthcare providers and professionals. The CUI design guidance
sets standards for the display and interaction of key clinical data within
electronic patient records, such as medications, clinical notes and
demographic information. The toolkit turns the design guidance into software
components that developers and health customers can deploy in their own
existing or upcoming clinical applications, saving their customers both money
and time to market.

“The Microsoft health CUI is a key building block to increasing
application time-to-market, clinician productivity and patient safety across
the healthcare industry,” said Roger Killen, managing director of The
Learning Clinic, a UK-based healthcare industry consultant aimed at improving
patient care and outcomes. “As an organisation developing healthcare
applications, it’s an essential planning tool to know when updates to an
application as critical as the CUI are coming, so we’re excited to have a
road map available.”

Since the CUI launched last July:

* More than 1,100 individual pieces of user interface guidance have been
published.
* More than 120,000 visitors have been to http://www.mscui.net.
* More than 12,000 visitors have downloaded individual guidance
documents.
* Almost 7,000 users have downloaded the toolkit controls.

Microsoft Connects Healthcare Platform

Application of the CUI is an important element of the Connected Health
Platform, Microsoft’s implementation of the Connected health Framework (CHF)
Architecture and Design Blueprint, a platform-agnostic set of design guidance
and tools for delivering service-oriented architecture solutions for health.

More information, including downloads of the Microsoft health CUI, can be

Health Framework can be found at

Hifn Writes Prescription for Protecting Patient Health Care Records With Advanced Encryption Technology

June 9th, 2008 by admin

LOS GATOS, Calif., May 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Hifn(TM) , the catalyst behind storage and networking innovation, is validating its commitment to the security and data protection requirements of the health care IT industry by headlining two health care technology events this month, including a featured speaking role by the company’s CTO.
(Logo: )
A recent series of high-profile leaks at the UCLA Medical Center of the medical records of celebrity patients highlights the vulnerabilities of medical facilities that lack proper information security. It also illustrates the security challenges that health care CIOs are struggling with as the industry transitions from paper-based to electronic patient records while complying with HIPAA and other regulations.
“An increased role for IT has long been proposed as the solution to skyrocketing health care costs, but that is only the starting point in transforming the industry,” said Russell Dietz, Hifn Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. “There needs to be closer collaboration between the IT vendors and solution providers and health care IT professionals to help them cut through all the noise and create medical technology solutions that adequately address their business and patient care objectives while complying with government regulations for privacy and the security of patient records and other business critical information.”
This week, Hifn is a sponsor of the CIO Healthcare Summit at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Marina del Rey, where 60 of the country’s top Chief Information Officers, Chief Technology Officers and Chief Information Medical Officers from leading health care organizations such as the Tenet Healthcare Corp., Shriners Hospitals and the Baylor College of Medicine will meet to discuss their specific IT requirements. The sessions will focus on the CIO’s security and data protection challenges in the areas of Electronic health Records, Backup and Disaster Recovery, HIPAA compliance and how Hifn’s Swarm secure iSCSI storage appliances can address those issues to help the CIOs improve their IT ROI and deliver improved patient care through increased productivity in an industry known for legendary inefficiency. The three-day CIO Healthcare Summit program will consist of panel discussions, themed interactive workshops, case studies and networking sessions.
Then on May 20, Dietz will be a featured speaker at the Towards the Electronic Patient Record (TEPR) conference at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center. Dietz will be speaking as part of the Security Measures for your Organization track with a presentation on “A Risk Management Approach to Data Security — Moving beyond FUD.” Dietz will address the confusion faced by many health care IT professionals who are attempting to wade through the claims of almost 1300 companies currently selling products to address some aspect of the health care data security problem. Virtually all of them sell using fear, uncertainty and doubt to scare customers into buying their products. As a result the whole realm of data security is more infused with smoke than light. Dietz will propose a better methodology for purchasing data security technology and introduce techniques of risk management necessary to achieve data security and availability goals within limited budgets.
Hifn’s Swarm Series of secure iSCSI storage appliances are the industry’s only iSCSI storage arrays that provide HIPAA-compliant storage right out of the box based on the Swarm’s built-in hardware data encryption. The unique features built into the Swarm storage appliances deliver a simple-to-install and easy-to-use scalable solution to address the privacy and security demands of health care organizations ranging from small medical offices to hospitals.
About Hifn
Hifn delivers the key channel and OEM ingredients for 21st century storage and networking environments. Leveraging over a decade of leadership and expertise in the development of purpose-built Applied Services Processors (ASPs), we are a trusted partner to industry leaders for whom infrastructure innovation in storage and networking is critical to success.
