National ePrescribing Patient Safety Initiative Supports Senate’s Call for Physicians to Adopt Electronic Prescribing, Improving Patient Safety

July 31st, 2008 by admin

CHICAGO, July 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Allscripts, the leading provider of clinical software, connectivity and information solutions that physicians use to improve healthcare, and the founding member of the National ePrescribing Patient Safety Initiative (NEPSI(TM)), today announced its firm support for the United States Senate’s approval of legislation that provides financial incentives for physicians to adopt electronic prescribing, or “e-prescribing,” and requires adoption by 2011. If signed into law by President Bush, the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (H.R. 6331), also would reverse a planned 10.6 percent pay cut to physicians who treat Medicare patients.
(Logo: )
“Electronic prescribing can prevent many of the needless deaths and injuries that medication errors cause each year, and with this legislation, the Senate has taken a significant step toward ensuring that patients are safer,” said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts and Co-Chair of NEPSI. “Allscripts and our NEPSI partners are committed to providing electronic prescribing technology at no cost to every physician. We urge the President to sign the bill into law and make it easier for more physicians to adopt this life-saving technology.”
As an incentive for physicians to adopt e-prescribing, H.R. 6331 would increase Medicare payments to physicians who regularly utilize e-prescribing by 2 percent in 2009 and 2010, then slightly less over the next three years. Physicians who do not use the technology would see their payments cut by 1 percent in 2011, and a maximum of up to 2 percent for 2013 and beyond. The bill allows for some exceptions to the rule.
An estimated 35,000, or fewer than 10 percent, of U.S. physicians use e-prescribing. The technology cuts the risk of medication errors by automating the prescribing process and alerting physicians to possibly dangerous drug interactions or side effects. Electronic prescriptions also reduce the risk of a misread prescription and save money because physicians are made aware of cheaper generic drug options when writing prescriptions. The nonprofit Institute of Medicine, part of the Washington-based National Academy of Sciences, has urged physicians to move to e-prescribing to reduce what it says are 1.5 million preventable medication errors each year.
“Electronic prescribing and this legislation are essential steps to improving the quality of health care and safety of patients,” said James Coffin, Ph.D., Vice President, Dell health Care and Life Sciences. “Along with our NEPSI partners, we’re committed to making this technology accessible and easy. Dell sees this legislation as an important first step in the broader adoption of technology across the U.S. health care system, which will ultimately result in better quality care and a more efficient system.”
NEPSI is a coalition of the nation’s leading healthcare and technology companies that is dedicated to eliminating preventable medication errors by providing free e-prescribing technology to every physician in America. NEPSI is led by Allscripts and national sponsor Dell Inc. , a leading global systems and services company.
Other NEPSI sponsors are Aetna, Cisco Systems, Fujitsu, Google — the coalition’s Search Sponsor — Horizon BCBS of New Jersey, Microsoft, NaviMedix, Quest Diagnostics, Sprint Nextel, SureScripts, Wellpoint, and Wolters Kluwer Health. The Allscripts web-based e-prescribing software is designed to appeal to physicians in solo practice or small groups. Available through NEPSI at no cost to any healthcare provider with legal authority to prescribe medications, the solution requires no download, no new hardware, and minimal training. The product can quickly generate secure electronic prescriptions and deliver them to the patient’s pharmacy of choice.
According to the National Progress Report on ePrescribing (), 35 million prescription transactions were routed electronically in 2007. A new study by the Department of health and Human Services estimates that if just 18 percent of physicians in Medicare adopt e-prescribing, the government will save $4 billion and nearly three million adverse drug events can be prevented over five years.

Greenway Medical Technologies Leads Ambulatory Interoperability Exchange

July 29th, 2008 by admin

CARROLLTON, Ga., July 9 /PRNewswire/ — Greenway Medical Technologies Inc., recently participated in the National health IT Week’s Capitol Hill Technology Showcase, held in Washington D.C. the week of June 9, 2008. The showcase marked one of the healthcare IT industry’s first and most successful real-time demonstrations of ambulatory software providers exchanging healthcare data between disparate EHR systems.
The unique health information exchange took place at the Capitol Hill Technology Showcase with more than 150 key decision makers in attendance including members of Congress, government health officials, healthcare IT companies, regional health information organizations (RHIOs) and other health information technology (HIT) leaders. Greenway(R), NextGen Healthcare Information Systems, Inc., IBM and Initiate Systems all took part in the demonstration. During National health IT Week, public and private entities collaborated to advance health IT adoption with “one voice, one vision.”
Members of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) and the Electronic health Record Vendor’s Association (EHRVA) demonstrated real-time, standards-based exchanges of healthcare information using a common scenario of a patient with a cardiac health condition needing medical attention from multiple care providers. The scenario documented the process as the patient moved through numerous care settings, showing that the benefits of interoperability are here today and capable of streamlining the exchange of healthcare information between disparate providers while improving overall healthcare in the U.S.
In February 2007, the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) approved the Continuity of Care Document (CCD), which set standards for interoperability that enabled clinical data to be transportable, thus enhancing patient safety and efficiency. Acting upon this documentation, Greenway designed its EHR solution, PrimeSuite(R), to meet the CCD standards for interoperability. Greenway continues to develop and deploy interactive data integration tools geared toward collecting patient-centric information from other ambulatory care systems. In July the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT(R)) added the requirement that CCHIT Certified(R) Ambulatory EHR 2008 products be capable of sending patient summaries using the CCD standards.
“Greenway is excited with the success and collaboration achieved by two of the HIT industry’s leading EHR providers,” said Justin Barnes, vice president of marketing and government affairs for Greenway. “The showcase effectively demonstrated the reality of data sharing from one ambulatory product to another and the call to action is clear, it is time we bring interoperability from a concept into a practical working exchange that will improve the quality of healthcare across the board and afford EHR adoption incentives such as the Stark relaxation to increase EHR availability.”
“There remains a sense that it is not yet possible to electronically exchange meaningful healthcare data. Real-time demonstrations such as this event and use of the Continuity of Care Document shows that what was once simply a concept is now beginning to positively impact the way EHR providers design their solutions,” said Lisa Spellman, director of IHE at HIMSS. “Today’s practitioners are starting to understand and request applications that provide interoperability between systems — we look forward to more EHR vendors committing to interoperability as it plays a key role shaping the way healthcare is provided in the U.S.”
About Greenway Medical Technologies Inc.
Greenway Medical Technologies provides the latest in ambulatory healthcare business solutions and services to 18,000 customers nationwide, in 30 specialties and subspecialties, by enhancing the delivery of patient care through innovative HIT software and on-demand services that allow physician practices to function at their highest level of efficiency. Greenway’s PrimeSuite is a comprehensive, interoperable component of its integrated physician’s infrastructure solution, which serves as the starting point of a long-term business plan for physician practices. PrimeSuite 2007 R2, the first EHR to be certified by CCHIT(R) based on 2007 Ambulatory Certification requirements, integrates a practice’s clinical, financial and administrative processes, and allows practices to increase profitability, enhance patient satisfaction and facilitate adherence to compliance guidelines. Established in 1998, Carrollton, Ga.-based Greenway Medical Technologies is a privately held company with 260 employees. For more information about Greenway, visit

SSM Health Care Upgrades Patient Care With Speedy Document Management Implementation

July 28th, 2008 by admin

CLEVELAND, July 9 /PRNewswire/ — Hyland Software, developer of the OnBase(R) enterprise document management software suite, announced that SSM health Care has experienced immediate results since the deployment of OnBase in March. Based in St. Louis, Missouri and offering services in four states, SSM is a forward-thinking health care provider to patients regardless of their ability to pay.
(Logo: )
As a core component of SSM’s electronic health record (EHR) project, OnBase already has made physicians more efficient, allowing each physician to see approximately three more patients on a daily basis. OnBase gives physicians access to the most up-to-date medical records and supporting documentation making patient information such as medication requirements or previous illnesses more accurate and physicians more effective.
Because the implementation date was set with a strict deadline of March 30, 2008, SSM had to find a solution that was both flexible and scalable. With OnBase’s capability to be implemented in phases while also integrating with EPIC, Microsoft(R) SharePoint(R) and SAP(R), SSM was able to reach the deadline while staying within budget.
“We saw a need for a system to grow and scale with us while also being able to move outside of scope of the electronic health record,” related Chris Bullerdick, IT Director at SSM health Care. “As a partnership, Hyland Software worked with us to go-live with OnBase in 45 days in the first hospital and will eventually scale OnBase across more than 5,000 physicians in our system.”
Bullerdick continued saying, “With such a variety of users within our 25,000 plus employees, the integrations with SharePoint and SAP make OnBase the complete solution for our ultimate goal of accomplishing patient safety.”
“SSM is a prime example of a healthcare system that understands the importance of technology as it relates to patient care and quality,” according to Tim Tegeder, Director of Healthcare Solutions at Hyland Software. “Our collaboration with SSM to create an integrated solution that also worked within the timetable of the EHR initiative has allowed the provider to increase their already strong focus on the patient.”

The webcast will feature Michael Day, Director of Information Technology, and Ajay Chaudhari, Network Design Specialist for Daughters of Charity and they will discuss their process for choosing and implementing a solution: how they built internal buy-in, identified and addressed potential pitfalls, and made critical decisions on replacing their previously implemented system with ZixCorp’s Email Encryption Service.

Additionally, the ZixCorp website is now featuring a Daughters of Charity success story that outlines issues that will be discussed during the upcoming webinar. Below is an excerpt from the success story:
“The security of protected health information (PHI) is very important,” said Michael Day, Director of Information Technology for DCHS. “Not only from a regulatory standpoint enforced by the health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), but because our patients and staff need to have that confidence in us.”
Not satisfied with the email encryption solution they were using, DCHS switched to ZixCorp’s Email Encryption Service.
“With our old solution, we were concerned we were at risk of not properly protecting our patients’ sensitive data or other important business information,” said Day. “It was also a massive challenge to administer the whole process from installation through to mailbox management, information tracking and overall maintenance. We needed a more efficient and thorough process.”
Day liked what ZixCorp had to offer because of its ease of use and excellent reputation as the leading email encryption solution for health care organizations. “It was simple to set up, fast to deploy, and transparent to use,” he said. “It has a better hit rate of encrypting messages than our previous solution. ZixCorp’s service detects PHI and other sensitive information and ensures they’re secured before delivery.”

National Dairy Council Guides Parents on Revised Milk Recommendations

July 23rd, 2008 by admin

ROSEMONT, Ill., July 7 /PRNewswire/ — New guidelines have been released in the July issue of Pediatrics, recommending cholesterol screening of children and adolescents with a family history of high cholesterol or heart disease.
These guidelines, part of a new clinical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) “Lipid Screening and Cardiovascular health in Childhood,” also recommend dietary changes for certain children and reemphasize the importance of following the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and increasing physical activity.(1)
One change the report recommends is to consider the use of reduced-fat dairy foods, such as reduced-fat (2%) milk, for children between 12 months and 2 years of age for whom overweight or obesity is a concern or who have a family history of obesity, dyslipidemia or cardiovascular disease.
“Research continues to show that for infants and children, milk and milk products are fundamental to a healthy diet,” said Karen Kafer, Vice President of Nutrition Affairs/Health Partnerships at the National Dairy Council (NDC). “We are working in partnership with the AAP to educate parents with children of different ages and health circumstances how to choose the milk products best for them. We want parents to understand that milk is more than just an important source of calcium for their children; it also contains eight other essential nutrients that help build and maintain strong bones, muscles and teeth.”
The AAP continues to emphasize calcium recommendations from its 2006 Report on Bone health which promotes 3 servings of dairy foods daily for children and 4 servings for adolescents.(2) Likewise, the Dietary Guidelines encourage children from ages 2-8 to consume 3 child-size servings from the milk group each day for a total of 2 cups; children age 9 and older should consume 3 cups per day.(3) Whole, reduced-fat (2%), low-fat (1%) and fat-free milk all provide the same package of vitamins and minerals; the only difference is the amount of fat.
Of the five important nutrients cited in the Dietary Guidelines as nutrients of concern because of inadequate intake by children and adolescents (calcium, potassium, fiber, magnesium and vitamin E), dairy foods are a major source of three — calcium, potassium and magnesium.(2)
“Since the overwhelming majority of children do not get the recommended 3 servings of low-fat or fat-free milk and milk products, increasing their consumption to recommended levels is key to improving their overall diet quality,” Kafer said.
“There are many factors for parents to consider when making dietary choices for their children,” said Tanya Remer Altmann, M.D., FAAP and author of the upcoming book Mommy Calls: Dr. Tanya Answers Parents’ Top 101 Questions About Babies and Toddlers (American Academy of Pediatrics, October 2008). “Based on these new AAP recommendations, parents should consult their pediatrician to determine the right type of dairy products for their family.”
For more information on the health benefits of dairy foods, visit and visit for recipes and tips to help children consume the recommended 3 to 4 servings of dairy each day. To view the AAP’s new clinical report “Lipid Screening and Cardiovascular health in Childhood,” visit .
